How to Choose and Use an Adjustable Drop HitchUpdated 2 months ago

An adjustable drop hitch helps you tow safely by ensuring your trailer rides level behind your vehicle. Rhino USA offers adjustable drop hitches in multiple sizes and receiver configurations, making it easy to find the perfect fit for your truck and trailer setup. This guide explains how to choose the right size and how to use your hitch.

Choosing the Right Receiver Size

Before purchasing, check your truck’s owner’s manual or measure your trailer hitch receiver opening:

  • 2" Receiver – Common on most ½-ton trucks and SUVs, such as Ford F-150, Chevrolet 1500, Dodge 1500, Jeep SUVs, and Jeep Gladiators.

  • 2.5" Receiver – Found on most ¾-ton and larger trucks, such as Chevrolet 2500, Dodge 2500, and Ford F-250.

  • 3" Receiver – Found on some late-model Ford trucks. These require a reducer sleeve to use a 2.5" drop hitch.

Choosing the Correct Drop Size

Rhino USA offers adjustable drop hitches in 6", 8", and 10" drops (our most popular is the 2" x 6" drop hitch). Use our drop sizing chart to determine the correct size for your application. A properly sized drop hitch keeps your trailer level, improving handling and safety.

Using Your Adjustable Drop Hitch

1. Insert the hitch into the receiver
Slide the drop hitch into your truck’s receiver and secure it with a hitch pin or locking pin.

2. Select the correct ball size
Each Rhino USA drop hitch features two hitch balls:

  • 2" ball – For smaller trailers.

  • 2-5/16" ball – For heavier trailers.

Flip the adjustable hitch assembly to switch between ball sizes.

3. Adjust the height
Loosen the adjustment pins, slide the ball mount to the correct height for your trailer, then lock the pins back in place.

4. Hook up your trailer
Back up to your trailer, lower the coupler onto the hitch ball, and secure the latch. Always double-check your safety chains and wiring before driving.

Best Practices

  • Always verify your vehicle’s towing capacity before hauling.

  • Keep hitch pins fully seated and secured with clips or locks.

  • Grease the hitch ball periodically to reduce wear and make coupling easier.
